Preparing for Earth Day 2010

Earth Day Sunday is just around the corner. With just 8 weeks left before Sunday, April 25th, your congregation should begin planning your special worship service or Christian education program now.

This year the National Council of Churches’  Earth Day Sunday Resource Sacred Spaces and an Abundant Life: Worship Spaces as Stewardship challenges congregations to make their sacred spaces reflective of the faith they claim, so that when people enter church buildings, they see reflections of the works of God.

To help plan your worship service the resource includes sermon starters, prayers, liturgy,  suggested hymns and a commissioning service of congregational Creation care ministries. Plan a special Sunday school class with discussion questions and activities for adults and youth.   Make the stewardship of God’s Creation and financial stewardship year-long priories with ideas for improving the energy efficiency and  land and water conservation of your church building.  Commit to environmental justice and protecting the health of your congregation by reducing toxic materials and products.
