Too Much Estrogen in the Room

I like to consider myself a womanist/feminist.  I take it as an insult when a man says, “There’s too much estrogen in this room.”  However, I am quickly learning that there is, in fact, such a thing as too much estrogen.

Estrogen pops up in the weirdest unexpected places.  Did you know Bisphenol-A (BPA) is estrogenic, and is in soup cans, water bottles and kids’ sippy cups?  That means every day, men and women are eating estrogen in our soups, and drinking it from our water bottles.  How gross is that?  Now that is too much estrogen in the room.

And it gets worse.  Did you know estrogenic BPA travels through the atmosphere and water?  It has been found in lobsters off the Northeast coast, and has undermined our feisty hard-shelled friends’ ability to reproduce.  We are steeped in BPA, as it has been detected in 93% of the U.S. population.  Research in the last two decades has found that BPA may contribute to early puberty in girls, prostate and breast cancer, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and behavioral changes in children.

Take action here to put out-of-control estrogen in check by making sure our Senators work to get BPA out of our products.

Lastly, there is hope. Already eight states, Canada, and Denmark have moved to ban BPA from baby bottles and other food and beverage containers. See the NCC’s announcement celebrating Canada’s recent decision to declare BPA toxic.

Major baby bottle manufacturers and sports bottle manufacturers like Nalgene have already or are currently switching to safe alternatives. Eden Foods and Muir Glen are now leading the way to provide BPA-free canned food options.  Click here for more information about how to make healthy choices to protect yourself from too much estrogen.
